What to Do If You're Locked Out of Your Car

A lockout is stressful, especially if the keys are still in the ignition or a child or pet is inside -- here's how to handle it safely and quickly.

  1. Check every entry point

Sometimes one door or the trunk release is unlocked even if the main doors aren't.

  2. Treat a child or pet inside as an emergency

If a child or pet is locked inside on a hot day, call 911 immediately -- this is not a wait-for-a-locksmith situation.

  3. Check for a spare key

At home, with a family member, or through a manufacturer's mobile app if your car supports remote unlock.

  4. Avoid DIY entry on newer cars

Coat-hanger or improvised entry methods are easy to damage on modern door and alarm systems.

  5. Call a licensed locksmith or lockout service

Have your registration or ID ready to prove ownership when they arrive.
