What to Do If Your Car Is Making Strange Noises
Some noises mean pull over this instant. Others just mean "get it looked at sometime this week." Telling them apart mostly comes down to what the noise sounds like and when it happens.
-
Grinding when you brake
Stop as soon as it's safe. That usually means the pads are worn through, and full brake failure could be close behind.
-
Squealing through turns
Often power steering fluid or a worn belt. Not usually urgent, but don't let it go unchecked for long.
-
A loud bang or backfire
Points to the exhaust or fuel system. Get it looked at before you put on many more miles.
-
A thump that speeds up with your speed
That's a tire or wheel issue most of the time. Inspect the tires before continuing.
-
Knocking from under the hood
Serious, full stop. Get it towed rather than risk the engine over it.
-
Not sure what you're hearing? Don't guess
Describe it to dispatch or a mechanic, including when it happens. They can tell you whether it's tow-now or drive-carefully.
Not able to sort it out yourself? Call dispatch and we'll come to you:
