What to Do If Your Car Is Leaking Fluid (Identifying Types)

Not every puddle under a parked car is bad news. Color, texture, and location tell you almost everything you need to know before a mechanic ever gets involved.

  1. Yellow-green or orange, sweet-smelling

That's coolant. Get it looked at soon, especially if the temperature gauge is starting to climb.

  2. Dark brown or black, oily to the touch

Engine oil. Check the dipstick, and don't keep driving if the level's low.

  3. Red and slick

Transmission or power steering fluid, both serious enough to check before you go much further.

  4. Clear, light, pooling near the wheels

Usually just A/C condensation. Nothing to worry about.

  5. Front, middle, or rear?

Noting where under the car it's coming from helps a mechanic narrow the source down fast.

  6. Not sure? Play it safe

A growing leak, particularly coolant or brake fluid, is how a manageable problem turns into a breakdown.
